Pakistan’s first women-only boxing ring under Commonwealth Sport project

Lahore, 17 Apr 2026 – Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) inaugurated a dedicated boxing ring for female athletes on its Jail Road campus Thursday, marking a first for women’s boxing infrastructure in Pakistan.

The facility was established under the Commonwealth Sport Game Changers Project and is designed exclusively for training and competition by female pugilists.

Commonwealth Games Association Pakistan and Pakistan Olympic Association President Arif Saeed formally inaugurated the ring as chief guest. He said the facility will expand training opportunities and help female boxers compete more effectively at national and international levels. Saeed also proposed future initiatives with LCWU, including a “Sports for All” program, an international sports conference, and a School of Sports at the university.

LCWU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Uzma Quraishi said the ring will help develop skilled athletes while promoting discipline and confidence among students. She thanked Commonwealth Sport, the Pakistan Olympic Association, and the Pakistan Boxing Federation for supporting the initiative.

The inauguration was attended by POA Secretary General Muhammad Khalid Mahmood, Pakistan Boxing Federation President Lt. Col. (R) Muhammad Nasir Ijaz Tung, PBF Secretary General Maj. Irfan Younis, officials, students, and national athletes.

LCWU Director Sports Dr. Sumera Sattar hosted the ceremony, which included exhibition bouts by women boxers. Shields were distributed to participants and guests at the conclusion.

The Game Changers Project aims to advance women’s participation in sport through inclusive infrastructure across Commonwealth nations.
