Sultan F. Husain Remembered: Son Pays Tribute on 27th Death Anniversary of Pakistan’s Pioneer Sports Journalist

LAHORE, October 19, 2026 – Kaisar Sultan Husain, son of legendary sports journalist Mr. Sultan F. Husain, has shared a heartfelt tribute on the eve of his father’s 27th death anniversary, which falls tomorrow, 20th October 2026.

In an emotional social media post, Kaisar wrote:

“Tomorrow, 20th October 2026, marks the 27th Death Anniversary of my beloved father, Mr. Sultan F. Husain. He was not only a pioneer Sports Journalist but the doyen of Sports Journalism in Pakistan.”

PCB Honour

Recalling his father’s contributions, Kaisar noted that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) acknowledged his lifelong services to cricket journalism in 2006 by naming the Media Box at Gaddafi Stadium as the “Sultan F. Husain Media Box” and later the Media Hall as the “Sultan F. Husain Media Hall” where journalists cover matches to this day.

A Trailblazer in Sports Journalism

Mr. Sultan F. Husain was the Founding Editor, Proprietor and Publisher of SPORTIMES, Pakistan’s first all-sports monthly magazine, launched in January 1956. He served as its Editor till his retirement on September 28, 1974.

His passion for sports journalism never ended. Even after retirement, he remained an active freelance journalist till his last days – his final weekly article appeared in the English daily The Nation on 17th October 1999, just three days before his passing on 20th October 1999.

He served as Pakistan correspondent for prestigious international publications including The Daily Mail (London), The Cricketer International, The Cricketer New Zealand and World Hockey. His articles also regularly appeared in The Pakistan Times, Star Weekly, The Mirror, Sportsweek and The Nation.

He was widely known by his pen name “Coverpoint” and his famous byline in The Nation – “Sultan F. Husain (with malice towards none)”.

Sportsman and Administrator

More than a journalist, Sultan F. Husain was a sportsman himself. He played cricket at school and college level and represented the Governor’s XI against Punjab University. He excelled in Badminton, where he was ranked among the top ten in All India.

In 1950, he was elected Secretary of the Punjab Badminton Association and in 1952, he was instrumental in forming the Pakistan Badminton Federation and getting it affiliated with the International Badminton Federation in the same year.

He authored two acclaimed books on cricket: “Shabaash Pakistan” (on the 1954 tour of England) and “The Fourth Trip” (on the 1971 tour). He also served as Honorary Public Relations Officer of the then Board of Control for Cricket in Pakistan (BCCP), now PCB, in the 1970s, appeared as a compere on PTV, and did cricket commentary for Radio Pakistan.

Prayer Appeal

Kaisar Sultan Husain has requested friends, colleagues and well-wishers to recite Surah Fatiha once and Surah Ikhlas thrice for the forgiveness and elevation of his father’s soul.

He is survived by his daughter Mrs. Saadia Hassan Rizvi and son Kaisar Sultan Husain.

May Almighty Allah bless his noble soul and grant him the highest place in Jannah. Ameen.
